Christopher's new Bumbo Seat

Christopher got a new present today. Mommy and Grammy went to Target and bought him a Bumbo Seat and a tray to go with it. My wife, being the wonderful Occupational Therapist that she is, couldn't resist trying him out in it the first chance she got. While my mother (Grammy) and I were at the store Mommy put him in it. We got home to this! How damn cute is this?...

and I absolutely love the "serious" pic. I think I'll call it the "Law and Order" pick. I dig the serious looks my kid shows off sometimes...they're funny

Dora's Special Birthday Magic Trick

My sister, in complete innocence and, obviously without paying much attention, inadvertantly put the candles on the cake...it just so happened that they made Dora look like she's got a large, blue penis...who'da thunk?

See Dora's Birthday present?

"¡SOY ESTE GRANDE!"

Yes it is, Dora. Yes it is.

"Nothing under my hat....y uno...y dos...y tres...presto!!!

[POOF!!!]

¡Mi presente está ardiendo! Cumpleaños felices!"

Bella's 4th of July Birthday Bash

So my in-law family was having their family July 4th picnic on, amazingly enough, July 4th. So, we thought it would be a good idea to include my nuclear family into the party-mode by celebrating my niece's 3rd birthday. Sure, her actual birthday isn't until mid-July, but I thought it would be both a wonderful sentiment and a nice way to send them all off back to Kansas (my sister's family went back to Kansas the following day). So we ordered a cake and got some presents and everybody helped out and made it a wonderful night for my Marie (my sis), Justin (her hubby), 'Bella, and my mother. They seemed to really like it. 'Bella got her cake, blew out the candles, openned presents, watched some July 4th fireworks, then went back to my house for bed. It was a great birthday night.

Isabella's first music lessons

Bella decided that she really wanted to learn how to play some instruments other than just the piano. So, Uncle 'T' introduced a few of the more uncommon instruments that he owns. They first started with the Tongue Drum, a member of the Idiophone family of instruments. For those who don't know, an Idiophone instrument is one which vibrates throughout its entire body when struck to produce its sound. The "tongues" are pitched, so they create a specific tone. Mine has only 4 tones, but they have up to 12 (to match the chromatic scale). Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals are a popular band that employs the Tongue drum fairly regularly. The orgins of the instrument date back to ancient African and Asian cultures. You might also know the Tongue Drum as a "Slit Drum," an "Xylodrum," or a "Log Drum." She was really feeling that one, but we could only find one of the mallets, so that got pretty old.

So, they moved on to the more traditional Tin Whistle. As we all know, the tin whistle, created in Ireland, is also commonly called a "Penny Whistle" due to the Irish vagabonds and beggars who would use it for entertainment and "panhandling." I personally like the more uncommonly used alternative name for the instrument, "The End Blown Fipple Flute." Don't ask how I know that, but I do. Regardless, 'Bella dug that for a little while. She blew through the "Fipple Flute" with vigor, making the pitches high and shrill. 'Bella and Uncle 'T' both got irritated by this and moved on to the next instrument.

We decided that the next logical step was the "Slide Whistle," or the "Piston Flute." This instrument proved to be a tad more challenging a concept for 'Bella because of the long slide. The instrument might have been a bit too long for her to use. So, Uncle 'T' blew into the whistle while bella pulled the "slide" out, making the pitch lower, then pushed the "slide" in, making the pitch higher. This was fun for a while, but 'Bella was more into the drumming....

...so, we opted to try out Uncle 'T's Djembe. He got this small, fancy djembe in Indiana at a world-market store. We had a lot of fun with that. Uncle 'T' held the drum for her while she struck the drum. She liked it, but much more prefered the "tongue drum" because it had a "stick," as she put it.

Anyway, that was Isabella's first musical lesson. We all had fun and, at least hopefully, learned a lot.

Day the Aunt Bet's

Today we spent the day at Aunt Bet's house. She was babysitting her grandson, Ben. Ben's cousin Kaylee decided she wanted to come over and play with Isabella and Ben. They got to swim in the "big pool" and the "little pool." They also got to frollick around in the inflatable fountain and do some swinging and sliding on the playground equipment. It was a great day of fun and games for all involved!

St. Micheal the Archangel Fair

Isabella accompanied Christopher to the St. Michael the Archangel Fair, a local church-run carnival. Christopher did have to chill with Dad in his handly little carrier because he was just shy of the minimum height requirements set by the "Carnies." He was diappointed at first, but he then settled down...thinking to himself that the rides were stupid anyways and he wanted no part of them. We accpeted his "face" excuses and he and I watched his cousin Isabella enjoy the train with Boo-Boo (Grandma Workman) and the helicopter...AND she rode the helicopter all by herself for the first time. Not too shabby for a girl who's about to turn 3!!

My Family's Arrival to Levittown

So, the family got here safely last Sunday...no problems. Christopher was instantly popular and deemed "cute" by my family. This is the first time they've seen the boy in real physical form...3-dimensional and all. So here are some pics of the family from Sunday night after they arrived from Kansas...
